Cabezon Peak Dispersed Camping

Free scattered campsites around the base of New Mexico's most prominent volcanic neck with epic sunset views.

Ring of dispersed camping spots in the shadow of Cabezon Peak, a 7,785-foot volcanic neck that rises dramatically from the high desert. Sites are spread across BLM land on dirt roads — some sandy spots, some firmer ground. No facilities whatsoever, pack out everything. Fire restrictions common during dry months, check current conditions.

Access via rough dirt roads from Highway 550, high-clearance recommended though not always required. Gets windy as hell in spring, but the sunrise and sunset light on Cabezon is worth dealing with the gusts. Popular with photographers and rock climbers.
