Apache Trail (State Route 88)

Legendary cliff-hugging road through Superstitions

Expert

Beyond Tortilla Flat, this historic route transforms from paved tourist road into 22 miles of serious backcountry driving that’ll remind you why they call it one of America’s most dangerous roads. The narrow, dirt shelf road clings to canyon walls above Roosevelt Lake, with sheer drops that demand respect and steady nerves. Built in 1905 to serve Roosevelt Dam construction, it passes through the heart of Superstition Wilderness where lost gold legends were born, offering spectacular views of rugged desert peaks and the massive lake below.

This is expert-level driving that’s claimed vehicles and lives over the years — one mistake on the narrow ledges means a very long fall. High-clearance vehicles only, with excellent brakes and experienced drivers behind the wheel. Winter offers the best conditions, though flash flood potential exists year-round. No permits needed, but Roosevelt Dam has facilities for fuel and supplies. What you earn is passage through some of Arizona’s most dramatic desert scenery and bragging rights for conquering a route that still intimidates seasoned desert rats.
