Steese Highway Extended

Beyond the end of the road into Alaska's last frontier

Expert

The Steese Highway (Alaska Route 6) officially ends in Circle, but a rough continuation pushes another 50+ miles northeast toward the Yukon River’s remote bends, eventually connecting to winter trap lines and mining claims in some of Alaska’s most isolated country. Beyond Circle, the maintained road dissolves into mining roads, trap lines, and subsistence trails that require serious navigation skills and self-reliance. This isn’t a highway anymore — it’s a collection of interconnected routes used by miners, trappers, and the rare adventurer willing to push deep into roadless Alaska.

This is expert-level overlanding requiring full expedition preparation, 4WD capability, and extensive recovery gear. The route involves multiple water crossings, potentially dangerous soft spots, and navigation through unmarked junctions where GPS signals are spotty. Only attempt this from June through August, and carry multiple forms of navigation, extra fuel, food, and emergency communication. What you get is genuine wilderness solitude — you might not see another human for days, and wildlife encounters are guaranteed. This is Alaska as it was meant to be experienced: raw, unfiltered, and utterly magnificent.
