Teller Road
Tundra crossing to a Bering Sea village
Teller Road runs 73 miles northwest from Nome across the Seward Peninsula to the Native village of Teller on Port Clarence. The gravel road crosses miles of open tundra, passing through the village of Brevig Mission before climbing coastal bluffs that overlook the Bering Sea. Midway through the route, the road crosses Pilgrim Hot Springs, site of a historic Catholic mission and natural hot springs that still bubble up from the permafrost.
This is easy to moderate overlanding suitable for any high-clearance vehicle, though dust and washboard sections can be brutal. The road is passable year-round but winter travel requires extreme cold weather preparation. Summer is best from June through September when the hot springs are most accessible. Fuel and supplies should be obtained in Nome, as Teller has limited services. The route offers excellent opportunities to spot musk oxen, caribou, and marine mammals along the coast.
