Kebler Pass

High-elevation dirt pass through the largest aspen forest in North America, connecting Crested Butte to Paonia.

This 10,007-foot pass cuts through Gunnison National Forest, offering one of Colorado’s most spectacular aspen displays in late September. The 30-mile dirt road is well-maintained and passable by most vehicles in good weather, though snow can close it from October through May. Dispersed camping is allowed along Forest Service roads throughout the area.

The pass connects Crested Butte to the town of Paonia via County Road 12. Expect washboard sections and some narrow spots, but nothing requiring 4WD. Cell service is nonexistent on the pass itself. Best accessed from the Crested Butte side for overlanders coming from the high country trails.
