Ntwetwe Pan — Makgadikgadi Salt Pan Edge Camping
Ntwetwe Pan is the western half of the Makgadikgadi system in northern Botswana, a huge, flat, cracked-white expanse that disappears into heat shimmer. Overlanders camp along the pan edge and on firm ground near it, usually with permission from local landholders or through nearby lodges and camps. There are no facilities and no shade, so bring every drop of water, your own shade, and a good spare. Nights are enormous and cold in winter, and the silence is complete.
The danger here is real. The pan surface looks solid but turns to a sticky, vehicle-swallowing trap when wet, and the wet season (roughly December through March) can put the whole area off limits. Stay on established tracks, keep to the dry season (roughly May through October), and never drive onto crusty-looking ground you haven’t checked. Recovery out here is a long way off. Carry a GPS, tell someone your plan, and verify access and any fees with local operators in Gweta before heading out. Have a dirty day.
Camp the edge of a salt pan the size of a country.
