Kodachrome Basin State Park Campground
Kodachrome Basin sits south of Cannonville, Utah, in a bowl of red, pink and white sandstone. The park is full of stone chimneys, called sand pipes, that stick up out of the desert floor like petrified smokestacks. The campground has developed sites with tables and fire rings, plus showers, drinking water and a dump station. It’s a good place to clean up and reset before or after a few days of dirt in Grand Staircase-Escalante. Sites are close to the rock, so you wake up with the cliffs lit orange. Shade is thin, so bring your own.
Access is easy. It’s paved the whole way from Highway 12, so any rig gets in. Spring and fall are prime. Summer runs hot, and it gets busy on holiday weekends. Dirt roads like Cottonwood Canyon Road run close by, but they turn to grease when it rains, so check conditions before you commit. Reserve ahead in peak season and verify rates and amenity status on the official page before you roll in. Have a dirty day.
