Algebuckina Waterhole — Oodnadatta Track Bush Camping
Algebuckina Waterhole is a long, permanent stretch of the Neales River off the Oodnadatta Track in outback South Australia. Nearby stands the old Algebuckina Bridge, the longest railway bridge on the original Ghan line. Overlanders bush camp around the waterhole under river red gums, with birdlife, quiet, and a huge night sky. There’s no tap water, no showers, and no rubbish service. Take your own water, treat anything you pull from the waterhole, and carry out every scrap of rubbish. Camping spots are informal and flat bare ground.
The Oodnadatta Track is a maintained gravel road, usually fine for any sturdy vehicle, though corrugations are relentless and sharp stones eat tyres. Rain can close it fast. Summer is brutal, so go in the cooler months from April to September. Camping rules and land tenure here can change, so verify with the SA Parks or local roadhouse before you commit. Fuel up at Marree, William Creek, or Oodnadatta, since there’s none out here. Have a dirty day.
River gums, a railway bridge, and outback quiet.
