Piste de l’Hoggar Sud — In Guezzam Border Approach Reg Flat Dispersed Camp
This is the real deal — open reg (gravel plain) camping on the Piste de l’Hoggar Sud, the main piste connecting Tamanrasset to In Guezzam and the Algerian-Niger border. The terrain is flat, firm gravel with almost zero shade, wide horizons in every direction, and the kind of silence that makes you check your ears. Most convoys running this corridor stop here to break the roughly 400 km south of Tamanrasset. No facilities whatsoever — bring everything. Temperatures are extreme in both directions depending on season. Night sky is exceptional.
Access is strictly via the piste itself — high-clearance 4WD mandatory, convoy travel strongly recommended by the gendarmerie. You will pass through multiple gendarmerie checkpoints; paperwork must be in order before you leave Tamanrasset. Sandstorms can reduce visibility to zero fast. Travel October through March to avoid lethal summer heat. Fuel and water resupply in In Guezzam is unreliable — carry reserves for the full route.
