Hombori Tondo — Sahel’s Tallest Rock Massif and Gourma Desert Sentinel
Hombori Tondo punches straight out of the flat Gourma scrubland like a fist — a sandstone massif that tops out around 1,155m and is visible for 50km in every direction across the Niger Bend desert. The main rock face, including the famous ‘Hand of Fatima’ needles just to the east at Les Aiguilles de Garmi, is a landmark every overlander on the Gao-to-Hombori piste will clock long before they reach the village. The massif marks the eastern gateway to Hombori town, which sits at the foot of the formation and serves as a fuel and water stop on this classic trans-Sahel route.
Access is straightforward on the sealed portion of Route Nationale 16 near Hombori, but the surrounding pistes into the Gourma elephant range are loose sand and laterite — high-clearance 4WD essential. Dry season only (October–April). Security conditions in this region have been volatile; verify current situation before travelling.
