Camping de Gao — Niger Bend Desert Town Stopover
Camping de Gao sits inside the town of Gao on the Niger River bend, and for overlanders running the Piste de Gao à Hombori it’s the logical staging point before the piste swings south into the Sahel. Shaded by a handful of trees in an otherwise brutally hot landscape, the site has historically offered basic bungalows and a tent/vehicle area, shared bucket-shower facilities, and a rudimentary kitchen. It’s no luxury spot — expect dust, heat, and the constant background hum of a Sahelian river town. Cold drinks from the bar when they’re available are worth more than gold out here. Capacity is loose; caravans and solo rigs alike have parked up here.
Access is straightforward via the paved Route Nationale 1 into Gao town centre. Note that security conditions in the Gao region of Mali have been severely deteriorating since the mid-2010s — verify current travel advisories from your government before entering. This entry reflects the site’s historical use by overlanders. Confirm current operational status before relying on it.
Last real camp before the Gourma piste.
