Mfuwe Bridge — Luangwa River Flood Plain Crossing and Wildlife Corridor
Mfuwe Bridge spans the Luangwa River just outside the national park gate and is the single vehicle entry point for overlanders heading into South Luangwa from Chipata. The bridge itself is a landmark — hippos hold the shallows below, crocs sun on the banks, and during dry season elephant herds routinely cross the tarmac approach road here in broad daylight. It is not a photo stop so much as a daily reality of travel in this corridor. The gate and bridge checkpoint are the administrative threshold between the outside world and one of Africa’s finest wildlife parks.
The approach from Chipata is roughly 100 km of progressively deteriorating tar that becomes seriously rough in the final stretch toward Mfuwe. The bridge is all-weather passable but the surrounding flood plain tracks flood out completely in the height of the rains (roughly December–March), cutting road access. Time your crossing accordingly. Fuel in Mfuwe town before heading deeper into the park — options disappear fast past the gate.
The gate where the wild things begin.
