Flatdogs Camp — South Luangwa National Park Public Campsite
Flatdogs sits right on the Luangwa River bank, a short walk from Mfuwe Gate. It’s a proper overland camp — grassy pitches under sausage trees, a functional ablution block, and wildlife that doesn’t clock off at sundown. Hippos, crocs, and the occasional leopard are regulars. The communal bar and kitchen make it a natural gathering point for overlanders crossing the park. Busy season runs May through October when the roads are passable and game viewing is peak. Book ahead in June–August.
Access from Chipata is roughly 100km on a mix of tarmac and dirt — passable in a high-clearance 2WD in dry season but plan for 4WD after heavy rains. The camp is privately run but accepts walk-ins when space allows. Pay in USD or ZMW. ZAWA park fees apply on top of camp fees — settle both at the gate.
Luangwa riverfront. Hippos guaranteed.
