South Luangwa National Park — Luangwa River Floodplain Dispersed Camp near Mfuwe
This is the real deal — primitive bush camping on the open floodplain of the Luangwa River, within the buffer zone and community areas flanking South Luangwa National Park. Flat sandy ground, mopane woodland fringe, and the sounds of hippos and hyena at night. No facilities, no fences. You’re relying on your own kit entirely. Fire is your call but keep it controlled — dry season turns the grass to tinder fast. Peak game movement is May through October when the bush thins out and water concentrates wildlife to the river.
Access is via the Mfuwe Road corridor east of Chipata. The track surface is dirt and can be deeply rutted or washed out after rains — a high-clearance 4WD is the minimum. Check ZAWA/DNPW regulations before dropping camp; community buffer zones have varying rules and a permit or local scout may be required depending on where you set up. No permanent signs mark the area.
Hippos, hyenas, and zero facilities.
