Roper Lake State Park Campground — Safford Desert Basecamp
Roper Lake sits about six miles south of Safford and gives you a proper home base when you’re running the Gila Box corridor or the southern BDR connector. The campground has both electric hookup sites and tent sites, a natural hot spring soaking tub (small, communal, built into the rock — it’s real), and direct access to Roper Lake for fishing. Cottonwood shade, a beach area, and clean restrooms make this one of the more civilized stops in the Graham County desert. It fills on weekends, especially October through April when the snowbirds roll in.
Access is paved all the way in off US-191 south of Safford. Host is on-site year-round. Summer temps here hit triple digits — May through September is survivable but brutal. Reservations are accepted and recommended on holiday weekends. Hot spring access included with campsite fee.
