Bastrop State Park CCC Trail Network
Depression-era roads through Texas's Lost Pines.
The Civilian Conservation Corps carved these roads through the Lost Pines back when America needed work and Texas needed trails, creating a network that winds through loblolly pine forest 100 miles from where pine trees have any business growing. These aren’t the manicured paths most state parks offer — they’re the original CCC maintenance roads that access fire breaks, primitive camping areas, and the kind of East Texas forest that survived ice ages in this Central Texas refuge. The main loop connects to spur roads leading to overlooks above the Colorado River bottoms and remote camping spots that haven’t changed much since the 1930s.
Easy to moderate difficulty on mostly dirt and gravel surfaces that any high-clearance vehicle can handle, though some sections get rutted after heavy rains and recent wildfire recovery areas can be rough. Best visited spring through fall, avoiding peak summer heat and winter hunting seasons. Park entry fee required but camping permits needed for overnight stays in backcountry areas. What you discover is a biological island of pine forest in post oak savanna country, plus some of the best-preserved CCC stonework in Texas — and the satisfaction of driving roads that put America back to work.
