Cape York Telegraph Track — Wenlock River Crossing Dispersed Camp
The Wenlock River crossing on the Old Telegraph Track is one of the most recognisable water crossings on Cape York, and the sandy flats immediately upstream and downstream have served as informal overnight camps for generations of four-wheel drivers pushing north. It’s open, exposed country — paperbarks and pandanus framing the river, red dirt tracks leading to the water’s edge. No facilities, no signs, no fee. Just you, the river, and whatever is sharing the waterhole with you (check for crocs before swimming — this is crocodile country, full stop).
Access is via the Old Telegraph Track north of Moreton Telegraph Station, roughly between Coen and Bamaga. The crossing depth varies dramatically with the season — in the Wet it’s impassable without a snorkel and serious river-reading skills. Dry season (May–October) is the window. Corrugated dirt and deep sand lead in. 4WD low-range essential. No water treatment here — carry your own.
