Trans-Labrador Highway — Alexis River Valley Dispersed Camp
This is raw Labrador. Pull off the Trans-Labrador Highway near the Alexis River drainage and you’re in thick boreal spruce with the river audible through the trees. Flat gravel shoulders wide enough for a truck and trailer. No facilities whatsoever — no pit toilet, no fire ring, no signage. You’re on Crown land managed by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, and dispersed camping is broadly permitted along the highway corridor. Black flies and mosquitoes are ferocious from late May through July — bring serious bug protection.
Access is dead simple: you’re already on the highway. Watch for wide cleared shoulders or old spur tracks leading toward the river. The TLH is paved in sections and gravel in others — dusty and washboarded depending on maintenance. Cell service is nonexistent through most of this stretch. Fuel up in Happy Valley-Goose Bay before heading east — the next reliable stop is Cartwright Junction or further.
Wild Crown land on the edge of nowhere.
