Ras Dashen — Ethiopia’s Roof and Simien Summit Viewpoint
Standing at the top of the Simien Mountains National Park high route, Ras Dashen punches through the clouds at 4,550 metres. From the approach ridgelines you get unbroken views across the escarpment edge, deep gorges dropping thousands of metres, and on clear mornings the shadow of the summit itself cast westward across the plateau. Gelada baboons work the grassy slopes all the way up to treeline. It is raw, cold, and genuinely remote — the air is thin enough to slow you down if you’ve come straight from the lowlands.
The trail terminus is the base camp zone on the eastern flanks. Vehicle access via the Debark-Adi Arkay corridor gets you within trekking distance; no 4WD can summit the peak itself. Entry requires an Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority permit purchased in Debark. Park rangers and armed scouts are mandatory — arrange both at the Debark park office before rolling. Altitude sickness is a real factor above 3,600m; plan a minimum two-night acclimatisation at Sankaber or Chenek before pushing east.
Highest point in Ethiopia. 4,550m. No shortcuts.
