Dolores River Canyon — Overlook at Paradox Valley Floor
Paradox Valley gets its name because the Dolores River slices straight across it rather than running along it — a result of stream antecedence carving through an evaporite anticline. Pull off anywhere along the BLM-managed Paradox Valley Road and you’ve got sweeping views of red-walled canyon country, salt desert scrub, and the muddy green river below. No crowds, no fee, no ranger station — just you and 300 million years of geology doing its thing. This is a legitimate jaw-dropper mid-route between Telluride and Moab.
The valley floor road (CO-90 to Paradox, then BLM dirt) is generally passable for most rigs in dry conditions. Spring runoff can make the river crossing sketchy. Cell service is effectively zero once you drop into the canyon. Fuel up in Naturita before heading in — nothing in Paradox.
River runs wrong — geology at its weirdest.
