Chalbi Desert — South Horr Valley Floor Dispersed Camp
South Horr is a Samburu trading village sitting in a narrow, palm-lined valley between the Ndoto Mountains and the start of the Chalbi Desert — and overlanders running the Isiolo-Moyale northern route have been pulling off here for decades. The valley floor offers flat, shaded ground along the seasonal Ewaso Ng’iro North tributary, enough space for several vehicles, and a genuine break from the corrugated lava rock that hammers suspension on either side of town. The village has basic supplies, cold sodas, and an independent, welcoming vibe. No formal campsite — just choose a clear flat spot outside of the active grazing areas.
Access is off the main A2 dirt track north of Baragoi. Road surface is rough dirt and lava gravel — high-clearance 4WD mandatory. The valley is a known overnight for Samburu overlanders and Kenya Wildlife Service rangers. Water from the village only — treat it. Busy during overlanding peak season (July-September). Nights are cool; days are scorching.
