Cape York Telegraph Track — Gunshot Creek Northern Flats Dispersed Camp
Gunshot Creek is the crucible of the Old Telegraph Track, and the flat scrubby ground on the northern approach is where serious rigs pull off to air down, check gear, and gather nerve before committing to the drop — or to recover and regroup after coming through. It’s raw bush camping: no facilities, no shade structures, just red dirt, spinifex, and the sound of other rigs working the obstacle. Shared by the Cape York overland community during dry season — expect company May through August. Self-sufficient only.
Access is via the OTT itself, which requires a capable 4WD — the track north of Bramwell Station is no place for a poorly equipped rig. The Gunshot bypass exists but the crossing sees heavy foot traffic. Carry all water, fuel, and recovery gear. No mobile signal. Fire restrictions apply — check Queensland QFES conditions before lighting anything.
Stage here before the OTT's most notorious drop.
