Tashi Delek Campground — Zhangmu / Dram Border Town Kathmandu Approach
Zhangmu (also called Dram) sits at roughly 2,300m on the steep Tibetan side of the Himalayan escarpment, just above the Friendship Bridge border crossing into Nepal. This small established campground area — used by overland convoys, truck drivers, and expedition teams — sits near the town proper. It’s not manicured. Expect basic toilets, no showers, and a dirt surface that turns greasy in the monsoon. The setting is dramatic: misty gorge, vertical jungle walls, and the sound of the Bhote Koshi river below. Town has food, fuel, and basic supplies.
Road from Nyalam down to Zhangmu is steep, tight switchbacks — not a place to push at night or in rain. The border has had extended closures (post-2015 earthquake, COVID) so verify crossing status well before you commit to this end of the route. Best season is April–June and September–November. Cell signal is present in town.
Last Tibetan camp before the Nepal descent.
