Friendship Highway — Tingri Plateau Open Valley Dispersed Camp
Tingri sits at roughly 4,300 m on the Tibetan Plateau, and the broad valley stretching south toward the Nepal border is one of the last places on the Friendship Highway where self-sufficient rigs can legally park off-road and camp in the open. The ground is rock-hard gravel mixed with sparse tundra grass, wind is relentless by midday, and the 8,000 m peaks of Cho Oyu and Shishapangma dominate the northern horizon. No facilities whatsoever — this is a bivouac, not a campground. Nights can drop well below freezing even in July.
Access is from the main Friendship Highway (G318) near Tingri town. All foreign travelers require a Tibet Travel Permit plus the Restricted Area Permit for the Shigatse Prefecture; checkpoints are active and enforced. Fuel up in Shigatse or Lhatse — Tingri has limited supply. Best season is May through September when passes to Nepal remain passable. Winter camping here is for serious expedition crews only.
Camp under 8,000 m peaks on the roof of the world.
