Bowron Lakes Circuit Road
Gateway to the untamed Cariboo wilderness
The Bowron Lakes Circuit Road winds 116 kilometers through old-growth cedar and spruce forests from Highway 26 to the iconic canoe circuit launch at Bowron Lake. Built in the 1960s to serve logging operations, this gravel artery now carries overlanders deep into the Cariboo Mountains where massive peaks reflect in pristine alpine lakes. The route crosses Isaac Creek twice on aging timber bridges and climbs through Becker’s Prairie, a high meadow system where caribou once migrated.
Moderate difficulty with seasonal washouts and loose rock sections requiring high clearance and decent tires. Stock 4WD handles it fine in dry conditions, but wet weather turns clay sections into skating rinks. Best June through September when bridges are maintained and snow clears the high country. No permits needed but fuel up in Wells—next services are 200 kilometers east. Dispersed camping throughout, plus the reward of accessing some of BC’s most untouched wilderness without the paddle.
