Colorado BDR North Segment — Walden to Steamboat Springs via Zirkel Wilderness Edge and Hahns Peak

North Park wide-open on the BDR's quiet end.

Moderate

Most people know the Colorado BDR for its high-drama southern San Juan segments, but the northern stretch between Walden and Steamboat Springs carries its own distinct character — wide-open North Park sagebrush basins framed by the Park Range, with the Mount Zirkel Wilderness rising hard to the west. The route climbs through Forest Service two-tracks east of the Zirkels, passes Hahns Peak — a dormant volcano cone you can summit on foot — and drops into the Elk River drainage above Steamboat. The track surface is predominantly gravel and dirt two-track with no technical rock challenges, but soft meadow sections hold water into July and can swallow an unlocked rig whole in a wet year.

This is a Moderate route — a stock 4WD with decent ground clearance handles it comfortably in dry conditions. The elevation tops out around 9,000 feet so no altitude drama, but afternoon thunderstorms July through August are a near-daily reality and lightning exposure on open ridge sections is real. No permit is required for dispersed camping on Routt National Forest lands, but fire restrictions are common by midsummer — check with the Hahns Peak / Bears Ears Ranger District before you light anything. Fuel up in Walden or Steamboat; there’s nothing in between that you can count on. The payoff is uncrowded BDR miles with elk, abundant camping, and a legitimate sense of having crossed North Park the right way.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock 4Runner or Tacoma handle this segment without modifications?

Yes — stock high-clearance 4WD rigs handle this segment fine under normal summer conditions. The surface is mostly dirt and gravel two-track with no extreme technical obstacles. Aired-down tires help on the looser sections but aren't mandatory.

When does this segment typically open and close for the season?

June through September is your window. Snow lingers on higher forest roads into late May, and early fall storms can shut things down fast after mid-October. Check current road conditions with the Hahns Peak / Bears Ears Ranger District before you roll.

Do I need a permit to run this segment or camp along it?

No permit required for the route itself or for dispersed camping on Routt National Forest land. Standard fire restrictions apply — check active restrictions with USFS before you go, especially mid-summer when fire danger runs high across North Park.

What's the hardest section between Walden and Steamboat, and what should I expect?

The stretch skirting the Zirkel Wilderness edge has the most elevation change and some muddy, rutted sections after rain. Nothing technically extreme, but wet clay on forest roads here gets slick fast and can bog down street-tired rigs — moderate experience and aired-down tires go a long way.

How far is the nearest gas from the route, and is 98 miles manageable on one tank?

Fill up in Walden before you leave — it's the last reliable fuel until Steamboat Springs at the end. At 98 miles of mixed dirt and two-track, most rigs with a standard tank make it without issue, but smaller fuel capacity vehicles or those running a heavy load should top off in Walden without question.
