Nossob River Valley 4WD Track — Mata-Mata to Two Rivers via the Kgalagadi Fossil Riverbeds

Kalahari sand and black-maned lions.

Moderate

The Nossob River hasn’t flowed reliably in decades, but its sandy bed is one of the most reliable big-game corridors in southern Africa. This 4WD track runs the full length of the South African side of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park from Mata-Mata in the west, up the Nossob to Two Rivers (Twee Rivieren) at the southern gate — roughly 160 km of deep Kalahari sand, riverbed crossings, and waterholes that pull in lion, cheetah, leopard, and the park’s famous black-maned lions. Cubitje Quap and Craig Lockhart waterholes are the money spots. The sand is the obstacle — soft, deep, and unforgiving if you’re running too much tyre pressure.

You need a 4WD in low range with good ground clearance and ideally sand tyres at around 18–22 psi. This is not a technical rock trail — it’s a sand management problem and a navigation game across featureless Kalahari terrain. All visitors require a park entry permit and must book rest camps well in advance; Nossob Camp and Kij Kij are your only stopovers in the park. No fuel available at Nossob Camp — carry extra. Best months are April through September when heat is manageable and wildlife concentrates at waterholes. What you get is genuine wilderness Africa with predator density that rivals the Serengeti.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock Land Cruiser or Defender handle this route without modifications?

Yes, but it needs to be a proper 4WD with low range and sand tyres — this is non-negotiable on the Nossob. The deep Kalahari sand will swallow a vehicle running street tyres or without the ability to air down significantly. Lift and lockers help but aren't required.

When is the Nossob track open and what happens in the wet season?

April through September is the window — dry, cooler, and the sand is manageable. The summer wet season (October–March) turns sections unpredictable, wildlife disperses away from the riverbeds, and SANParks can close sections without notice.

Do I need a permit and do I have to book camps in advance?

Yes on both counts. You need a valid Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park entry permit, and wilderness campsites along the Nossob must be booked through SANParks in advance — they fill months out, especially April to August. Walk-ins don't exist here.

What's the hardest section and what should I actually expect?

The deep sand between Mata-Mata and the Nossob camps is the most demanding — corrugations, loose drifts, and long stretches with no shade or shade trees where a recovery takes real time. It's rated moderate but underestimating the sand fatigue on both driver and drivetrain is the most common mistake people make.

How far is it between fuel stops and is there any on the route itself?

Fuel is available at Mata-Mata and Twee Rivieren (Two Rivers) camp, but nowhere in between across the full 160km run. Carry a minimum 50-litre reserve — sand driving burns fuel hard, and breakdowns in this corridor with no cell service mean you're waiting on a ranger patrol or another vehicle.
