Gibb River Road — Home Valley to Wyndham via Cambridge Gulf and Keep River Rim

Most drivers treat Wyndham as a fuel stop and nothing more, but the run from Home Valley Station east through the Pentecost flood country to Cambridge Gulf is some of the rawest country the Kimberley throws at you. The Cockburn Range rises like a wall of oxidised iron to the south while the track drops through creek lines that go chest-deep in the Wet — in the Dry they’re corrugated hard-pan and loose river gravel. The Keep River corridor beyond pushes into the Northern Territory fringe, and the old Durack family pastoral history is thick in these red clay soils. El Questro’s Pentecost River crossing is the famous postcard shot, but the lesser-driven track between Home Valley and Wyndham has its own quiet savagery.
This stretch is Moderate to Difficult depending on how late in the dry season you arrive and how hammered the corrugations have gotten by August. High-clearance 4WD is non-negotiable; a dual battery and a snorkel are smart. Fuel at Home Valley Station before you leave — Wyndham has it, but nothing in between does. Best window is June through August. Dispersed camping along the flood plains is possible but read croc-risk signage seriously. No permits needed for the road itself; Keep River National Park entry requires a NT Parks fee.

Will a stock Pajero or Land Cruiser 200 with a snorkel handle this stretch without modifications?
A stock high-clearance 4WD with a working snorkel is the minimum — this isn't a trail to test a lifted RAV4 or unsnorkelled rig. The river crossings near Cambridge Gulf can run deeper than expected depending on recent rain, and the corrugated gravel will punish anything with worn-out suspension. Aired-down all-terrain tyres and a recovery kit are non-negotiable.
Is this section driveable outside of June–August?
Hard no for most of the wet season (November through April). River crossings become impassable and the dirt surface turns to bog. The shoulder months of May and September can work, but check conditions locally — Wyndham locals and roadhouses will give you the honest call.
Do I need permits to drive through Keep River National Park and camp here?
Keep River National Park requires a parks pass for camping — managed by NT Parks and Wildlife. The WA side falls under Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley jurisdiction; no road permit is required but station properties along the route may have gate rules. Check NT Parks directly before you go.
What's the hardest section and what makes it technical?
The river crossings in the Cambridge Gulf tidal zone are the real test — water depth varies, the bottom is soft in places, and you are genuinely in saltwater crocodile habitat, so a bogged crossing is a serious situation. Walk crossings before you drive them, know your departure angles, and do not let anyone stand in the water.
How far is the nearest fuel from the start at Home Valley Station, and is there any resupply before Wyndham?
Home Valley Station has fuel — fill up there before you leave. There is nothing reliable between Home Valley and Wyndham on this route, and that's roughly 180km of remote corrugated road. Carry a minimum of 20L extra fuel and check that Home Valley's bowser is operational before you depart, as remote station supplies can run out.
