Most people drive the Gibb east-to-west and miss the finale entirely. Running from Home Valley Station north through the Pentecost River flood plain and up the Great Northern Highway spur into Wyndham, this 120-kilometre closing segment crosses the iconic Pentecost River — a wide, croc-inhabited crossing that can run thigh-deep well into June — before the corrugated pindan track spits you onto the escarpment above the Cambridge Gulf. The Five Rivers Lookout above Wyndham is one of the most underrated views on the continent: five river deltas flaring into the gulf like an open hand. Do it at dusk and you’ll understand why people sell everything and drive north.
The crossing at the Pentecost is the crux — check water levels at Home Valley Station before you commit. A snorkelled, high-clearance 4WD is the minimum; a proper touring rig with a second vehicle is smarter. The Kimberley dry season runs May through September; anything outside that window is closed or genuinely life-threatening. Fuel at Home Valley Station and again in Kununurra. No permits required for the road itself. What you get out of this stretch is closure — the Kimberley on your own terms, all the way to salt water.

A stock high-clearance 4WD will manage, but a snorkel is strongly recommended — the Pentecost River crossing can run deep and is not negotiable without one during or after rain. Corrugations on this section are brutal on standard suspension and tyre pressures; run them down to around 28 psi on dirt to avoid shredding sidewalls.
What months is this route actually passable?
May through September is the dry season window — that's your only realistic shot. The wet season (October–April) closes most of the Gibb River Road entirely, and the Pentecost River becomes impassable and genuinely dangerous. Check current road conditions with the Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley before you leave Kununurra regardless of the time of year.
Do I need a permit to drive this section or camp along the way?
No permit is required to drive the road itself. If you're stopping at Home Valley Station, camping fees apply directly through the station. Dispersed camping exists along the route but croc risk is real — do not camp on river banks or near any water source without checking current safety advisories from DBCA.
What's the hardest part of this route and what should I actually expect?
The Pentecost River crossing is the crux — it's wide, rocky-bottomed, and saltwater crocodiles are present year-round. Check depth before committing, watch for other vehicles' crossings if you can, and do not walk in or near the water. Beyond the river, expect relentless corrugations and patches of bull dust that will test your recovery gear and patience equally.
Is there any fuel or supplies between Home Valley Station and Wyndham?
No. Fill up completely at Home Valley Station before you leave — there is nothing between there and Wyndham across 120 km of remote Kimberley track. Carry a minimum 20-litre jerry can as a reserve, and note there is zero cell service for the entire route, so a PLB or satellite communicator is not optional out here.
