Lawn Hill National Park Campground

Lawn Hill — officially Boodjamulla National Park — is one of Queensland’s most spectacular and undervisited gorge systems. The main campground sits right on the gorge edge, surrounded by palms, pandanus, and that burnt-red sandstone that makes every photo look unreal. The swimming hole is freshwater and croc-free (rare in this part of the world), the canoeing through the gorge is world-class, and the Waanyi cultural sites add serious depth to the place. Expect a full-facility camp by remote outback standards — flush toilets, cold showers, water. Hot in summer, mild and perfect in dry season (May–September).

Getting here is the commitment. From Mount Isa it’s roughly 220 km, much of it dirt. The Gregory Developmental Road and the final stretch to the park can be impassable in the wet season — this is genuine outback driving, not a weekend afternoon. Fuel in Camooweal or Burketown before you head in. Reservations through Queensland Parks are near-mandatory in dry season; this place fills up.
