Wairarapa Coast Dispersed Camping — Ngawi Area

Dispersed Camping

The Wairarapa coast south of Ngawi is raw, dramatic, and largely ignored by the campervan crowd that clogs the rest of NZ. Dispersed camping on DOC-managed land near Cape Palliser puts you beside the Tasman Sea with New Zealand fur seals hauled out on rocks within walking distance. The area is exposed — bring a windbreak and stake your tent hard. No potable water, no toilets in the dispersed zones. The Cape Palliser lighthouse is a short hike up 258 steps from the road and worth every one of them.

Access from Martinborough on the sealed Cape Palliser Road, transitioning to gravel closer to Ngawi. Most stock-standard 4WDs handle it fine in dry conditions. The road can be cut by slips after heavy rain — check DOC conditions before committing. Cell service disappears well before you reach the cape.

Seals, lighthouse, and wind-scoured coast.
