Tsaranoro Valley — Andringitra Massif Granite Wall Viewpoint

The Tsaranoro Valley sits at the foot of the Andringitra Massif in south-central Madagascar, where sheer granite faces — some topping 800 metres — erupt from rice paddies and zebu pastures. The Col de Tsaranoro face is one of the longest big-wall rock climbs in the southern hemisphere. For overlanders who grind their way out here, the reward is one of the most dramatic landform contrasts on the continent: working agricultural villages in the valley floor dwarfed by vertical stone on a scale that genuinely stops you mid-sentence.

Getting here means navigating badly corrugated piste south of Ambalavao — 4WD essential, high clearance strongly preferred. The route deteriorates further in the wet season (November–March). Camp Catta near Tsaranoro acts as a base; fuel and resupply are back in Ambalavao. No meaningful cell service. Bring everything you need.
