Simien Mountains — Imet Gogo Escarpment Viewpoint

Imet Gogo at roughly 3,926m is the classic viewpoint inside the Simien Mountains National Park — a sharp basalt escarpment that falls away to the Tekeze lowlands far below. Gelada baboons graze the cliff edges in troops of hundreds, entirely unbothered by humans. It’s a short hike from the Chenek camp area, and on a clear morning with Ras Dashen (Ethiopia’s highest peak at 4,550m) visible to the southeast, this is one of the great mountain panoramas in Africa. Access is through the park gate at Sankaber, approximately 100km northeast of Gondar on a partly graded road that deteriorates significantly in the wet season (June–September). A mandatory scout guide is required inside the park — budget for it. The road from Debark to Chenek is rough dirt and stone; high-clearance 4WD is the practical minimum. Altitude sickness is a real consideration for those arriving quickly from low elevation.
