Simien Mountains — Ras Dashen Summit Approach Viewpoint

The Simien Mountains are Africa’s most dramatic highland plateau, carved by millions of years of erosion into sheer basalt cliffs and deep gorges. The viewpoints along the escarpment near Chennek camp and toward the Ras Dashen approach are staggering — you’re looking across ridgelines at 4,000+ metres with gelada baboons grazing the cliff edges and Ethiopian wolves hunting in the heath above. Ras Dashen itself, at roughly 4,550 metres, is the fourth-highest peak in Africa.

Access is from Debark via a rough gravel and rock road through Sankaber. High-clearance 4WD is required beyond Sankaber in wet season (June–September). The park requires a registered scout to accompany all visitors — arranged at the Debark park office. A UNESCO World Heritage Site. Altitude sickness is real here — acclimatise in Gondar or Axum before pushing up. Fuel available in Debark; stock up.
