Novolazarevskaya Station Russian Antarctic Base

Novolazarevskaya — ‘Novo’ to everyone who’s been there — sits on a rocky outcrop in Queen Maud Land and has been continuously occupied since 1961. Russia runs it as a full-year station with a compacted-snow airstrip capable of handling IL-76 heavy lifters, which makes it a critical link for Antarctic Logistics & Expeditions (ALE) and other private operators moving people and gear into the interior. Fuel, communications, and emergency shelter are available here by prior arrangement through official channels.

Access is strictly by air — Novo is not a coastal station. Nearest resupply port is Cape Town, roughly 3,500 km north. All visits require government authorization and coordination with the Russian Antarctic Expedition (RAE). This is a working scientific base, not a tourist stop, but it is one of the most strategically positioned stations on the continent.
