Shackleton’s Endurance Wreck Site Weddell Sea

In March 2022, the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust located the wreck of Ernest Shackleton’s Endurance exactly where Frank Worsley’s century-old navigation logs said it would be — 3,008 meters down in the Weddell Sea, remarkably intact. The ship sank in November 1915 after being crushed by pack ice, launching one of the greatest survival stories ever told. The site sits beneath some of the most hostile sea ice on the planet, which is precisely why the wreck survived untouched for over a hundred years.

No vessel can reach this position casually — the Weddell Sea is notorious for rapid ice closure and has claimed ships far more capable than Endurance. This is a waypoint for context and planning reference, not a casual sail-by. Remotely operated vehicle footage from the 2022 expedition shows the ship’s name still readable on the stern. That image alone is worth knowing about.
