Mirny Station Russian Antarctic Base
Mirny Station sits on the Davis Sea coast of East Antarctica and has operated since 1956, making it one of the oldest continuously active Antarctic bases. It serves as the coastal logistics anchor for Russian operations deep into the interior, including the famous tractor-train traverses to Vostok Station. The station has fuel storage, basic mechanical support for tracked vehicles, and accommodation for traverse teams. Summer population runs into the dozens; winter crew is minimal. Resupply ships run from St. Petersburg or Hobart depending on season and route.
Coastal position means it’s more accessible by ship than pure inland stations, but independent access is still impossible without Russian program affiliation. Ice conditions in the Davis Sea dictate ship arrival windows, typically December through February. All logistics are coordinated through AARI, St. Petersburg.
