Debenham Islands Windmill Islands Archipelago

The Windmill Islands sit off the Budd Coast of Wilkes Land in East Antarctica, a jagged scatter of rocky outcrops poking through the ice sheet just offshore from Casey Station. The Debenham Islands are among the most accessible of these — low, wind-hammered granite knobs colonized by Adélie penguins, Weddell seals, and nesting seabirds. The exposed rock is ancient Precambrian gneiss, some of the oldest material on the planet. In summer the melt pools and lichen patches give the place an alien kind of color against all that white.

Access is from Casey Station by Hagglund tracked vehicle or small boat in summer. The Australian Antarctic Division manages the area under strict environmental protocols. Visits by non-station personnel are essentially nonexistent without a formal science program. No facilities, no shelter — just stone, ice, and a lot of very loud penguins.
