Troll Station Norwegian Antarctic Base

Troll sits roughly 235 km from the coast in Dronning Maud Land at about 1,275 m elevation on a rocky outcrop surrounded by ice sheet. It’s one of a handful of Antarctic stations that operates year-round and receives wheeled aircraft on its blue-ice runway — a genuine logistical hub for the Norwegian Antarctic programme and visiting national expeditions. The station runs a small permanent crew in winter and expands significantly in summer season (November–February). Fuel, communications, meteorological data, and emergency shelter are the core assets here.

Access is by air from Cape Town via Troll Airfield — there is no overland vehicle route for visiting teams. The surrounding Jutulsessen nunataks make for dramatic terrain. All visits require coordination with the Norwegian Polar Institute well in advance. No drop-ins, ever.
