Halley VI Research Station British Antarctic Survey

Halley VI is the British Antarctic Survey’s flagship station on the Brunt Ice Shelf, Coats Land, in the Weddell Sea sector. It’s the sixth incarnation of the Halley station — previous versions were swallowed by ice or compromised by shelf movement. The current design sits on hydraulic ski-legs that allow the entire structure to be towed to safer ice when needed. Wintertime skeleton crew of around 13; summer operations swell that considerably. It’s the primary BAS node for atmospheric and space weather research in this sector, and the nearest coordinated resupply hub for the eastern Weddell Sea coast.

All access is through British Antarctic Survey coordination out of Cambridge, UK, via icebreaker RRS Sir David Attenborough from the Falkland Islands. No independent arrivals. The shelf itself is dynamic — calving events have affected operational schedules in recent years, so verify current station status with BAS before any planning.
