Cape Evans Scott’s Terra Nova Hut

Built in 1911 as the base for Scott’s ill-fated Terra Nova expedition to the South Pole, this hut on the western shore of Ross Island is preserved almost exactly as the men left it. Supplies, equipment, and personal effects remain inside, sealed by the Antarctic cold for over a century. The Antarctic Heritage Trust manages access strictly — you’re stepping into the last place Scott and his team slept before their fatal polar march. Nothing else on the continent hits this hard historically.

Access is by helicopter or zodiac from McMurdo Station or visiting research vessels. No independent overland access exists — Ross Island terrain and sea ice conditions dictate all movement. Visitation is limited and managed; permission required through Antarctica New Zealand or equivalent authority. Best visited during the austral summer, November through February.
