Neumayer Station III German Antarctic Base

Neumayer Station III is operated by the Alfred Wegener Institute and sits on the Ekström Ice Shelf in the Atlantic sector of Antarctica. The current third-generation station, opened in 2009, is elevated on hydraulic stilts to combat snow accumulation — a serious engineering flex. It supports year-round atmospheric and geophysical research with a winter crew of around 9 and a summer crew up to 50. For expeditions working Dronning Maud Land — one of the most spectacular and least-visited stretches of the continent — this station is the primary regional resupply and emergency fallback point.

Access is by ship during summer (typically via the research vessel Polarstern) or ski-equipped aircraft. No overland vehicle access exists — everything out here moves on snow traverses or by air. Coordinate well in advance through AWI if your permitted expedition is operating in this sector.
