Port Lockroy Historic British Base A

Port Lockroy on Goudier Island is as close to a landmark waypoint as the Antarctic Peninsula gets. Base A was established in 1944 under Operation Tabarin — Britain’s wartime Antarctic intelligence mission — and it ran as a research station until 1962. The UK Antarctic Heritage Trust has kept it frozen in time, right down to the tins on the shelves and the equipment on the workbenches. There’s a small museum, the world’s most remote post office, and a resident Gentoo penguin colony that nests right up against the walls of the building. Postmarks from here are legitimate and collectable.

Goudier Island is a Zodiac landing from expedition cruise vessels — no other access. The site is managed by the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust and sees significant vessel traffic November through March. Landings are coordinated through IAATO. One of the few Antarctic sites with actual infrastructure beyond a research station.
