Palmer Station Research Base
Palmer Station is the smallest of the three US Antarctic Program stations and the only one reachable by ship without an icebreaker. Operated by the NSF on the western Antarctic Peninsula, it sits at the base of a glacier on Arthur Harbor. Infrastructure here supports science teams and logistics personnel — fuel, communications, emergency medical, and coordination with vessels are all present. It’s not open to casual visitors, but credentialed expedition teams and permitted vessel crews can access resupply support through formal channels.
Access is exclusively by sea, primarily via the Laurence M. Gould research vessel out of Punta Arenas, Chile. The station operates year-round with a summer population near 40 and a skeleton winter crew. Any access requires advance coordination with the US Antarctic Program — this is not a walk-in stop.
