Deception Island Volcanic Caldera

Deception Island sits in the South Shetland Islands off the Antarctic Peninsula and is exactly what it sounds like — a collapsed volcanic caldera with a narrow sea entrance called Neptune’s Bellows that lets ships and zodiacs sail directly inside the volcano. The interior harbor, Port Foster, is ringed with ash-dark beaches, rusted-out whaling station ruins at Whalers Bay, and steam venting from the black sand near Pendulum Cove. On a clear day it looks like the end of the world decided to be beautiful about it.

Access is by expedition vessel only — no roads, no overland route in any traditional sense. The island sits under joint Chilean and Argentine oversight with British territorial claims. British, Argentine, and Chilean research stations have all operated here at various points. Best visited November through March during the austral summer window. Wildlife is dense: chinstrap penguins, fur seals, and seabirds crowd every usable inch of shoreline.
