Rothera Research Station

Rothera is the British Antarctic Survey’s principal station, sitting on Adelaide Island off the western Antarctic Peninsula. It’s a proper logistics hub: a gravel runway long enough to handle wheeled aircraft (the Dash-7 and BAS’s newer A319CJ), a marine facility with a small jetty, fuel storage, workshops, and a medical station. Around 100–150 people in summer, a winter-over crew of roughly 22. For peninsula-based expeditions — whether scientific or private — Rothera is the go-to resupply and emergency extraction point on the west side of the Peninsula.

Access is by BAS charter flight from Punta Arenas, Chile, or by research and expedition vessels. Civilian access requires coordination with the British Antarctic Survey and appropriate permits under the Antarctic Treaty. The station sits near Ryder Bay, with Stork Glacier immediately behind it — the landscape is dramatic and constantly reminding you how exposed you are.
